BOSTON ELOPEMENT GUIDE

thinking about eloping?

If you're thinking about a Boston elopement, you're not alone. More couples today are choosing smaller, more intentional ways to get married—whether that means just the two of you, a few close family members, or a small group of your favorite people.

Boston is actually a wonderful city for elopements. Within just a few blocks you can move between historic brownstone streets, waterfront views, quiet gardens, and some of the most iconic architecture in New England. It creates the perfect backdrop for a simple ceremony and meaningful photographs afterward.

Over the years I’ve photographed many elopements and small weddings throughout Boston. Some have been just the couple, an officiant, and a witness. Others have included a handful of family members celebrating together in a park, courthouse, or favorite part of the city.

However you define it—an elopement, micro-wedding, or small intimate wedding—the heart of the day is the same. It’s about committing to each other in a way that feels personal, relaxed, and true to who you are.

This guide walks through the basics of eloping in Boston, including where you can get married, how the marriage license process works, and some of the best locations around the city for your ceremony and portraits.

why couples choose a boston elopement

For many couples, eloping simply feels more natural than planning a large traditional wedding.

Some couples want a quieter experience focused on the moment itself. Others love the idea of exploring the city together, celebrating with a small group of people they’re closest to, and avoiding the pressure of a large event.

A Boston elopement also offers a lot of flexibility. Instead of a tightly packed timeline, the day can unfold more organically. After the ceremony, we can explore different parts of the city for photographs—from the Public Garden and Beacon Hill to the waterfront or the historic streets around downtown.

For couples who value connection, simplicity, and meaningful moments, eloping can create a wedding experience that feels deeply personal while still celebrating in one of the most beautiful cities in New England.

If you're wondering how to elope in Boston, the process is actually simpler than many couples expect.

If you're wondering how to elope in Boston, the process is actually fairly simple. Massachusetts makes it relatively straightforward to get legally married, and most Boston elopements come together in just a few steps.

1. Apply for a Marriage License
In Massachusetts, a marriage license is valid for 60 days from the date you apply, and it must be used within the state. That means your ceremony needs to take place somewhere in Massachusetts.

2. Complete the Marriage Intention Form at City Hall
You and your partner will need to appear together at a city or town clerk’s office to complete a Marriage Intention form. Be prepared to provide:
  • Valid identification (passport, driver's license, state ID, or military ID)
  • Your Social Security numbers (or explanation if one was never issued)
  • Your legal names and the last name you plan to use after marriage
  • Your current address
  • Your dates and places of birth
  • Your parents’ names, including maiden names
  • Whether your parents were married when you were born
  • Information about any previous marriages and divorce dates

The application fee is typically $50, payable by cash, debit/credit card, or money order depending on the city.

3. Wait Three Days
Massachusetts requires a three-day waiting period after filing your Marriage Intention before your license can be issued. If necessary, this waiting period can be waived through a Marriage Without Delay waiver issued by a court, which currently costs about $195.

4. Pick Up Your Marriage License
Once your license is ready, you'll pick it up and bring it with you to the ceremony. The officiant performing the ceremony will complete the license and return it to the city to officially register your marriage.

best boston elopement locations - the ultimate list

One of the great things about planning a Boston elopement is how many beautiful locations the city offers within a short distance. From historic brownstone streets to waterfront parks and quiet gardens, there are plenty of places that make a perfect setting for a simple ceremony and relaxed portraits afterward.

Below are some of my favorite Boston elopement locations that work especially well for small weddings and intimate celebrations.

Boston Public Garden
– A Classic Boston Elopement Location

The Boston Public Garden is one of the most iconic photography locations in the city, and for good reason. Between the historic footbridges, tree-lined paths, and views of the surrounding Back Bay skyline, there are plenty of beautiful spots for portraits and small ceremony moments.

For couples planning a Boston elopement, it’s an easy location to work with because everything is within walking distance and the scenery changes quickly as you move through the park.

The main thing to keep in mind is that it can get busy, especially on weekends and during peak tourist seasons. If privacy is important, an early morning ceremony or portraits during quieter hours can make a big difference. The Public Garden also requires a photography permit from the Boston Parks and Recreation Department.

Location: Boston Public Garden
Address: 4 Charles St, Boston, MA 02108
Best for: Scenic gardens, classic Boston photos, walking portraits
Permit required: Yes

Christopher Columbus
Waterfront Park
– A Scenic Boston
Elopement Location

Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park is another beautiful option for couples planning an outdoor Boston elopement. Located along the city’s waterfront in the North End, the park offers a mix of greenery, harbor views, and one of Boston’s most recognizable features—the long wooden trellis covered in climbing vines.

Between the rose garden, shaded pathways, fountain, and views of the harbor, there are plenty of spots that work well for both small ceremonies and relaxed portraits afterward. The location also places you within walking distance of the North End’s historic streets, which can add even more variety to your photos.

Because it’s a public park in a popular part of the city, it’s common for visitors to pause and watch a ceremony as it unfolds. That’s part of the charm of getting married in Boston. For ceremonies or professional photography, it’s best to arrange a permit through the Boston Parks and Recreation Department.

Location: Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park
Address: Atlantic Ave, Boston, MA 02110
Best for: Waterfront views, shaded gardens, the iconic trellis walkway
Permit required: Yes

Mooo… at XV Beacon
– An Elegant Indoor Boston Elopement Location

For couples who prefer an indoor setting, Mooo… at XV Beacon offers a beautiful and intimate option in the heart of Beacon Hill. The restaurant is located inside the historic XV Beacon Hotel, making it especially convenient if you're staying there or getting ready on-site before the ceremony.

One of the highlights of this location is the private wine cellar, which creates a unique and elegant space for a small ceremony or celebratory dinner. It’s a great option for couples who want something intimate and refined without having to worry about weather or crowds.

Another advantage is the location itself. Beacon Hill and the Boston Common are just steps away, which means you can easily step outside for portraits on the historic streets or in the nearby park before returning inside for the ceremony or meal.

Location: Mooo… at XV Beacon
Address: 15 Beacon St, Boston, MA 02108
Best for: Elegant indoor ceremonies, intimate celebrations, private wine cellar setting
Permit required: No (private venue)

Charles River Esplanade
– A Classic Waterfront Boston Elopement Location

The Charles River Esplanade is another classic Boston setting that works beautifully for an outdoor Boston elopement. Running along the banks of the Charles River, the area offers a mix of waterfront views, tree-lined paths, and some of the most scenic sunset light in the city.

In addition to the river itself, there are stone bridges, small docks, art installations, and flowering trees scattered throughout the park. The Esplanade also connects easily to other parts of the city, making it simple to combine with nearby locations for portraits. Many couples will walk over from the Boston Public Garden, or access the park via the pedestrian bridges near Dartmouth Street or Fairfield Street.

Late in the day the light filtering through the trees along the river can create some especially dramatic portraits. While I’ve never personally needed a permit for photography here, the Esplanade Association is a good resource if you want to confirm current guidelines or inquire about permits.

Location: Charles River Esplanade
Address: Boston, MA 02116
Best for: River views, sunset portraits, scenic walking paths
Permit required: Typically no for small photography sessions, but confirm with the Esplanade Association

Larz Anderson Park
– A Beautiful Garden Setting Near Boston for an Elopement

While Larz Anderson Park is technically located in Brookline rather than Boston, it’s so beautiful that it absolutely belongs on this list of great places for a Boston elopement. The park covers more than 60 acres and offers a mix of landscaped gardens, walking paths, open lawns, and water features that make it feel peaceful and tucked away from the city.

Two of the most popular ceremony spots here are The Temple of Love and Cory Hill. The Temple of Love sits beside a quiet pond surrounded by trees and feels very secluded, while the Cory Hill location offers a sweeping view of the Boston skyline in the distance.

Because it’s a public park managed by the Town of Brookline, you’ll need to secure a permit if you plan to hold an elopement or small wedding ceremony there.

Location: Larz Anderson Park
Address: 323 Goddard Ave, Brookline, MA 02445
Best for: Garden ceremonies, scenic park landscapes, skyline views
Permit required: Yes

Hampshire House
– A Historic Beacon Hill Boston Elopement Venue

Located directly across from the Boston Public Garden, Hampshire House is a classic Beacon Hill venue that offers both historic charm and an elegant setting for a small wedding or Boston elopement. The mansion-style building has long been known as one of the city’s more iconic event spaces, with beautiful interior rooms and a reputation for excellent food.

One of the biggest advantages of this location is how central it is. After a ceremony or small celebration inside, you’re just steps away from some of Boston’s most photogenic areas—including the Public Garden, the Charles River Esplanade, and the historic streets of Beacon Hill like Acorn Street.

For couples planning an intimate celebration with a refined, classic Boston atmosphere, Hampshire House offers a great balance of convenience, elegance, and location.

Location: Hampshire House
Address: 84 Beacon St, Boston, MA 02108
Best for: Historic mansion setting, elegant small weddings, Beacon Hill photos
Permit required: No (private venue)

The Lyman Estate
– A Historic Garden Estate Near Boston for an Elopement

Located in nearby Waltham, The Lyman Estate is a beautiful historic property that works wonderfully for couples planning a Boston elopement or small wedding just outside the city. Originally built in 1793 as a summer estate, the property now includes 37 acres of landscaped grounds surrounding the historic mansion.

One of the highlights of the estate is its variety of backdrops. Between the formal gardens, wide open lawns, historic architecture, and the well-known greenhouse conservatory, there are plenty of options for both ceremonies and portraits. The setting feels quiet and elegant while still being just a short drive from Boston.

For couples looking for a classic New England estate setting with beautifully maintained gardens and indoor options available, the Lyman Estate is definitely worth considering.

Location: The Lyman Estate
Address: 185 Lyman St, Waltham, MA 02452
Best for: Historic estate setting, formal gardens, greenhouse portraits
Permit required: Yes (for events / photography through Historic New England)

Gore Place
– A Historic Estate Near Boston for an Elopement

Located in nearby Waltham, Gore Place is another historic estate that’s well worth considering for couples planning a Boston elopement or small wedding celebration. The centerpiece of the property is an impressive early-19th century brick mansion, surrounded by 45 acres of fields, wooded paths, and historic outbuildings.

Built in 1806 as a summer residence for a prominent Boston family, the property is now a National Historic Landmark, which gives it a unique sense of history and character. The wide open grounds and surrounding landscape offer plenty of space for intimate outdoor ceremonies and relaxed portraits.

Because the mansion is a protected historic site, there are fairly strict guidelines about where visitors can go inside and where photography is allowed. That said, the main room of the mansion can make a beautiful indoor setting for an elopement if the weather changes unexpectedly. Afterward, you’re just a short drive from restaurants in Waltham or back into Boston to continue the celebration.

Location: Gore Place
Address: 52 Gore St, Waltham, MA 02453
Best for: Historic estate setting, open landscapes, elegant outdoor ceremonies
Permit required: Yes (for ceremonies and professional photography)

Boston Public Library
– A Grand Indoor Boston Elopement Location

For couples looking for an iconic and elegant indoor setting, the Boston Public Library in Copley Square offers one of the most beautiful backdrops in the city for a Boston elopement. The historic McKim Building is known for its incredible architecture—marble staircases, vaulted ceilings, murals, and the famous courtyard—which create a timeless atmosphere that feels distinctly Boston.

The library offers a small private room that can be reserved for intimate ceremonies, making it a great option for couples who want a meaningful indoor setting without hosting a full traditional wedding. After the ceremony, the building itself provides several striking locations for portraits, and the surrounding Back Bay neighborhood offers even more opportunities for photos just steps outside.

Because the library is a historic and highly visited public space, reservations and permits are typically required for ceremonies and professional photography, and availability can be limited depending on the day.

Location: Boston Public Library (McKim Building)
Address: 700 Boylston St, Boston, MA 02116
Best for: Historic architecture, elegant indoor ceremonies, classic Boston atmosphere
Permit required: Yes (reservations and photography permits required)
